'Ageing at the Centre' forum

In a first for AAG, the inaugural 'Ageing at the Centre' forum was held in Mparntwe Alice Springs last week.

Facilitated through the work of the AAG Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG), the two-day forum brought together Elders, service providers and other stakeholders to share their knowledge, experience and insights to improve the experience of ageing in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Workshop topics and presentations were generated from members of ATSIAAG and included strategies to support social and emotional wellbeing in staff and clients, innovative care practices from culturally safe providers in regional and remote areas, and best practice approaches to advance care planning with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A particular focus was also placed on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care workforce.

On behalf of ATSIAAG, AAG extends its sincere thanks to Tangentyere Aged and Community Services (TACS) - specifically AAG Board member Ben Poona - and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing and Aged Care Council (NATSIAACC) for supporting the event, and to our hosts at the Purple Shed, Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation.

AAG will continue working with members of ATSIAAG to undertake policy development on key issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ageing and aged care.

Positive ageing advocate to give keynote address

The 2023 AAG Conference is pleased to announce that Marcus Riley will be delivering the 2023 David Wallace Address. Marcus is the executive Chairman of Ballycara, founder of the Booming movement and author of the highly celebrated ageing guide, Booming.

Booming has become a movement that inspires people to look at ageing as a way to give back to oneself, to our loved ones, neighbours and our communities. His Booming message puts us all back in the driver's seat of what can be the most enjoyable ride of our lives should we choose to make it so.

Marcus brings together two decades of experience in the ageing industry across the globe to share real stories of people thriving at all stages of their later lives. He is the immediate past chair and current Director of the Global Ageing Network and has become an industry leader with local, national and global influence. He regularly addresses major forums on ageing at the United Nations and is on several UN working and stakeholder groups, all aimed to promote and advocate for the rights of older people globally.

We are thrilled to have him speak at the 56th AAG Conference on the Gold Coast.

AAG500 blog by Prof Tony Broe: Why is voting 'Yes' to the Voice important?

For the June AAG500 blog, we're pleased to share the words of Professor Tony Broe, former AAG President and founding Friend of AAG's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG). This is particularly timely, as we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week 2023 and its theme of 'Be a voice for generations'.
